The workshop VUUM brings together a group of experienced HCI researchers and practitioners to explore a long-standing research problem – the meaningfulness of measurable constructs and the measurability of non-measurable ones.

One may argue that basically everything can be measured, but some things may be more “measurable” than others; how to estimate the threshold of measurability remains unclear.
Roads are of outmost importance for mobility of people and transport of goods throughout Europe. Experts believe that up to 50% of the total maintenance budget is spent on winter maintenance in many European countries. It therefore has a high significance not only in keeping roads, cycle tracks and footways free from ice and snow but also in matters of pedestrians, cyclist and driver safety. Cost Action 353 “winter service strategies for increased European safety” started in April 2004 and ran for a four year period until April 2008.

Participants from 22 European countries have been intensively working together from the very beginning to achieve the main objective of the Action – to develop a framework for the management of winter traffic for maximized road safety, and the secondary objective – to integrate new methods of winter maintenance management through the use of the latest technologies for data management, communication and vehicle positioning.

The aim of this pocket guide is to bring together all relevant information about COST into an “easy to use” publication. This guide covers the whole of the COST system for research cooperation in Europe, including information about COST governance, contact points and financial instruments plus, most importantly, the COST Actions.

This proceedings volume of the Challenging Glass 4 & COST Action TU0905 Final Conference held 6-7 February 2014 at the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, represents the final Action Publication of the European Research Network COST Action TU0905 “Structural Glass-Novel design methods and next generation products.” It contains nearly 100 peer-reviewed papers-published by more than 180 authors from 22 different countries- that focus on the architectural and structural applications of glass in structures and facades. As such, it provides a profound state-of-the-art of structural glass design and engineering. A must-read for all architects, engineers, scientist, industry partners and other enthusiasts interested in this rapidly evolving and challenging domain.

COST Action 858 Workshop, 25-27 May 2008, Portugal

In laboratory animal science, four working groups were established to discuss the housing of animals, environmental needs, refinement of procedures, genetically modified animals, and cost-benefit analysis. Based on the activities of these working groups, this book provides the European best practices for individuals and institutions working with laboratory animals. The text also provides a guide for the ethical evaluation of experiments and procedures involving animals.
