Exploitation of Ground-based GPS for Operational Numerical Weather Prediction and Climate Applications - Final Report

2005 | Action 716

The COST Action 716 “Exploitation of Ground-based GPS for Operational Numerical Weather Prediction and Climate Applications” was prepared during 1997 and 1998 when a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was written and approved. The necessary signatures, from different countries, were obtained during the autumn of 1998 and its kick-off meeting was held in January 1999. Around that time many European countries had installed, or had plans for, continuously operating ground-based GPS networks to be used as geodetic references, support surveying and navigation, and deliver data for basic research studying the dynamics of the earth. It has by then also been realized that information about the atmospheric water vapour content above each receiving antenna was obtained from the accurate geodetic GPS data analysis.
Water vapour is difficult to measure, but is of great importance for accurate modelling of the dynamics of the atmosphere, both for weather prediction and for climate applications. The possibility to have continuous time series of the water vapour content was therefore identified as a potential new important data source. It was time for a collaboration, and coordination at the European level, and geodesists and meteorologists were invited to work together within the COST Action 716.

Theory and Practice in Heritage and Sustainability - Between past and future

2015 | Action IS1007

This book explores cultural sustainability and its relationships to heritage from a wide interdisciplinary perspective. By examining the interactions between people and communities in the places where they live it exemplifies the diverse ways in which a people-centred heritage builds identities and supports individual and collective memories. It encourages a view of heritage as a process that contributes through cultural sustainability to human well-being and socially- and culturally-sensitive policy.

The international conference ‘Ripening Regulation and Postharvest Fruit Quality’ was organized within the framework of COST Action 924. The aim of this COST Action is the ‘Enhancement and Preservation fo Quality and Health Promoting Components in Fresh Fruits and Vegetables’. The meeting mainly discussed the recent innovations in controlled atmosphere technology and/or the use of chemical ethylene inhibitors as new tools for influencing ripening and quality preservation in climacteric fruit, but also stressed preharvest hormonal influences of fruit development and ripening. Nearly all oral and poster presentations are published after peer review in this volume of Acta Horticulturae.
