Alien CSI Bioblitz 2023: Going beyond the COST Action to engage society in invasive species monitoring

Species of plants or animals introduced to new locations accidentally or intentionally are called alien or non-native species.
There is currently no sign of saturation in the accumulation of alien species introductions worldwide, while the rate of spread of alien species seems to be increasing.
Some of the alien species that become invasive in the introduced locations, can have detrimental impacts to biodiversity, human health and the economy.
Managing invasive alien species (IAS) depends on accurate, detailed and up-to-date information on occurrences, distribution, pathways and impacts of IAS at varying spatial scales across Europe and indeed globally.
Citizen scientists (CS), i.e., citizens involved in recording biodiversity on a voluntary basis, can greatly help towards the monitoring and management of IAS.
Through the European Alien CSI Bioblitz 2023, citizen scientists can join scientists and get involved in recording biodiversity and IAS in particular.
The Alien CSI Bioblitz 2023 aims to raise awareness regarding invasive alien species and their impacts on biodiversity and at the same time collect data at the European level that will help scientific research and IAS management programmes.Join this event and learn about IAS while celebrating biodiversity in the field!
Under the framework of the COST Action Increasing understanding of alien species through citizen science, a second edition of the Alien CSI Bioblitz, a 3-day event across Europe, is organised from 26 to 28 May 2022 in different European countries.
The main aim of this COST Action is to address multidisciplinary research questions in relation to developing and implementing Citizen Science advancing scientific understanding of Alien Species dynamics while informing decision-making, specifically implementation of technical requirements of relevant legislation.
