Vegetation plays a vital role in the urban environment. Unfortunately it can also create problems by causing damage to technical infrastructures such as sewage pipes, roads, railways and buildings. The damage is often the result of the restriction of the vegetation to a small growing niche in the competition for space with technical infrastructures. If such conflicts cannot be identified at an early stage, and every effort made to prevent their occurrence, they can lead to disruption of services, great expense and damage to the environment.

This workshop has been organised as an activity in the SUSVAR (COST 860) network in cooperation with the European Consortium for Organic Plant Breeding (ECO-PB), the Working Group 3 of COST 851. COST has financed these proceedings. The aim of this workshop is to exchange results and facilitate the discussion on different views on breeding strategies for varieties better adapted to organic cereal production, with special focus on the question whether and how molecular markers can be of benefit for organic breeding programmes. The focus of this workshop is on cereals with a few examples from other crops.
