This guideline was prepared within the COST Action E55 “Modelling of the performance of timber structures” WG3 “Robustness of Structures”. The main objective of the Action is to provide the basic framework and knowledge required for the efficient ans sustainable use of timber as a structural and building material. Focus is directed on the aspects of design, construction, assessment and maintenance of competitive and high performance timber structures. The Action mainly considers high performance structures where the load-bearing capacity is of predominant interest; for example, structures such as timber bridges, large-span halls and roofs, and also load-bearing elements of other types of timber structures.

The role of energy in the modern world goes beyond mere technology and economics to influence welfare, the environment, the quality of life and, in broad terms, civilization itself. Since the industrial revolution, energy conservation technology has been at the forefront of the innovation required to satisfy the needs of mankind and, more than any other, this technology has always depended on the performance of the materials used. In this, the report of the Fifth Liège Conference devoted to a review of the work of the European Materials Collaborative Programmes, the results of the programmes are presented along the following technology oriented themes: steam power plant gas turbines diesel engines advanced combustion perspectives. The book thus presents one of the most up to date references available anywhere on materials technologies in energy conversion from fossil fuels and materials for high efficiency, low emission systems.

Cet ouvrage a été produit au sein du WG2 “Rural Landscapes” de l’Action COST A27. Il montre la place des marqueurs dans les paysages culturels hérités, qui est illustrée très tôt, dès l’Antiquité, par les débats et controverses qui agitent, dans la longue durée, le monde rural. Le texte d’Agennius Urbicus, traité technique et pratique d’arpentage, insiste sur la multiplicité des modes de marquage , dont bien des traces subsistent encore partout en Europe.

Ce volume met en évidence l’ancienneté des réglements juridiques et la pérennité des types codifiés de marqueurs – bornes, lignes d’arbres, chemins, talus, fossés, murets…- qui ont modelé les formes paysagères européennes en liaison avec les structures de la propriété.
