Looking to the future of UK-EU relations in science and technology

27/01/2021

Director of the COST Association, Ronald de Bruin joined a high-level panel on Tuesday 26 January, for the Science Business event, “What’s next for UK-EU relations in science and technology?” The online event aimed to explore the latest developments and possible future impact on the R&I community following the finalised UK-EU trade deal made at the end of 2020.

The long history of brain circulation between the UK and European mainland through European Union participation, has contributed to developing world leading research projects and technological advances. As such, research and development leaders from both sides of the channel have been keen to continue this successful partnership and find workable solutions within the parameters of the Brexit agreement.

In his speech, Director of the COST Association, Ronald de Bruin stated “The agreement between the EU and the UK, which concluded on 24 December 2020, is a positive step towards the association of the UK to Horizon Europe. The UK is of paramount importance for science and research in Europe, given its excellence base of researchers, innovators and academic institutions.” He then surmised how little will change for British researchers participating in the COST programme, explaining that they will still be able to take part in all networking activities, as well as hold leadership positions. However, he acknowledged the increase in practical difficulties levied by the agreement, including new visa regulations and the exchange of personal data.
