COST-JRC ‘Science for policy’ seminar

We invite you to join us for a lively exchange on how to connect the worlds of science and policy. In order to explore this goal, this seminar will highlight different ways in which researchers try to achieve policy impact. Focusing on how to bring science to the attention of policymakers, the seminar will address tips, recommendations, challenges, lessons learnt, skills and practices outlined in the COST policy brief ‘Actions to Actions’ and the JRC ‘Science for Policy Handbook’, both published in the last year.

Providing insights into how ‘science for policy’ activities are implemented in practice, Prof. Dolores Gavier-Widen, Chair of COST Action ‘Understanding and combating African Swine Fever in Europe (ASF-STOP)’, will explain the policy impact that was achieved by her Action. Her intervention will focus on the Action’s collaboration with key policy stakeholders, the Action’s advice to national governments on how to incorporate research results into policies, and the use of data, produced by the Action, by EU and international policy makers.

Dedicated to researchers and research organisations aiming to achieve policy impact, the JRC ‘Science for Policy’ Handbook puts together advice on new skills and practices for individual researchers, but also discusses elements of institutional change – knowledge areas and processes in which to invest. Ms Marta Sienkiewicz, JRC Project Officer, will explain how the Handbook puts co-creation at the centre of Science for Policy 2.0, thereby creating a more integrated model of knowledge-policy relationship.

This online seminar is jointly organised by COST and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC). The JRC is the European Commission's science and knowledge service, with a mission to bring science and knowledge into EU policymaking. Over the past years, it has embraced new types of knowledge and practices in order to increase the impact of research on European policies.

As an essential activity for COST Actions, COST science informed policy advice aims to support the interaction between COST experts and policy stakeholders.
