COST strengthens careers for a better ERA

On 26 and 27 October 2021, the Slovenian Presidency of the EU organised a flagship Conference on the new European Research Area (ERA). The Conference came at a crucial time, as the discussions will provide input for the adoption of the ERA Policy Agenda which will be adopted at the European Competitiveness Council on 26 November 2021.

A crucial element for an effective and well-functioning ERA is the free flow of researchers across the continent. The mobility of researchers is a prerequisite for the advancement of science and technology, and COST has been offering these mobility schemes for more than 50 years. During one of the break-out sessions, COST Director Ronald de Bruin stressed the importance of international mobility schemes, as they offer researchers the necessary empowerment to collaborate with colleagues in Europe and beyond, leading to both important scientific developments and breakthroughs, and benefitting their careers in the long run.

COST offers a wide range of instruments and tools, allowing researchers to meet and connect. Recently, COST was one of the frontrunners in Europe when it introduced virtual mobility grants. Virtual mobility has gained momentum and is offering an interesting approach to mobility, which will help to widen mobility across Europe. Virtual mobility could contribute to a more balanced brain circulation and support lower performing research countries to participate in knowledge circulation. Additionally, it can also provide more family friendly conditions and hence help reduce inequalities in accessing mobility opportunities.
