World Adherence Forum 2024 - Leveraging digital innovations for medication adherence and health outcomes in Europe

Millions of people are dependent on chronic medication to cope with their disease(s). However, adequate intake of medication remains a challenge for about 50% of people that are being them prescribed. On an annual basis, the OECD estimated that this so called “medication nonadherence” is associated with 200,000 deaths and €125 billion of costs in Europe alone.

Novel digital technologies such as smartphone apps, electronic pill bottles and digital inhalers may be able to support patients in taking their medication and help healthcare professionals to better monitor the effects of medication. Yet, their implementation in European health systems is lagging behind.

Over the last 4 years, the COST Action ENABLE, a multidisciplinary network of 300 healthcare professionals, researchers and technologists have addressed this challenge. At this event, the main findings from ENABLE are being shared and discussed with a multi-stakeholder audience, including medical specialists, primary care practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, health economists, pharmaceutical industry, medtech industry, but also patient organisations and policy organisations such as the World Health Organisation (WHO). The outcome of the events will be a White Paper with recommendations for policy makers, calling for action.
