COST Connect | Coordinating cancer research in Europe: collaborating for progress

Curing cancer will be one of the major challenges for research and innovation in the years to come. It is expected that in 2030, more than 1.5 million people in the EU will die from cancer, making cancer a disruptive disease for patients and their families, healthcare systems and society at large.

The challenges in cancer research are numerous and range from personalised prevention and early detection of the disease to clinical trials, chemotherapy resistance and the development of personalised medicine.

Beating cancer will require a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach, relying on both discoveries in basic research and innovative methods across disciplines. Collaboration on a European level will be key, as well as the usage of the large amounts of data which are available in the healthcare sector. The systematic availability and use of this data – combined with recent innovations in the field of Artificial Intelligence – would drastically improve the efficiency and effectiveness of cancer research and existing healthcare systems. Enabling research-driven solutions to the challenge of beating cancer is the only path to success. Addressing the disease will both improve the quality of life for patients and their families, and reduce healthcare costs across Europe.

This COST Connect event will provide a multidisciplinary platform where researchers, policy-makers, cancer patient organisations and industry will discuss the challenges ahead in cancer research, leading to an improved coordination on European level.
