COST Connect on climate-neutral and smart cities

  • December 9, 2020 09:30 - December 9, 2020 13:00

The European Union aims to reach the ambitious goal of climate neutrality in 2050. To achieve this, a European Green Deal has been recently launched, with the ambition of €1 trillion of investment over the next ten years. This would allow, among others, to achieve emission reduction targets set for 2030 to between 50% and 55% compared with 1990 levels.

To become a global leader in the transition to a climate-neutral economy, there is need of a strong concerted action at the EU level. In supporting this historic transition, a key role will be played by research and innovation activities on climate-neutral and smart cities. These will deal with systemic and transformative solutions affecting governance, behaviours, technologies and investments to enable sustainable living in urban contexts. The world is undergoing an urbanisation, with more than two thirds of the world population expected to live in urban areas by 2050. Sustainable efforts cannot be achieved without significantly transforming the way we build and manage our urban spaces.

The development of systemic and transformative solutions for climate-neutral and smart cities will require a multi-stakeholder and interdisciplinary approach able to collaborate across disciplines and geographical boundaries by sharing and co-creating knowledge.

This COST Connect online event provides a suitable platform where COST Actions, stakeholders, researchers, policy makers and business actors will identify and debate enablers, challenges and feasible pathways for climate-neutral and smart cities. By bringing together relevant actors and supporting knowledge sharing and synergy creation, this event will contribute to strengthen awareness and coordination at European level as well as to identify key areas of intervention to be addressed by the ongoing Horizon Europe discussions. As Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities was identified as one of the Missions in Horizon Europe, this event will furthermore provide pan-European input into this debate.

Attendance to this event is by invitation only.
