Advancing gender equality in research and innovation is fully embedded as a key objective in EU gender equality policy. More specifically, gender equality and gender ‘mainstreaming’ (the integration of a gender perspective in the preparation and evaluation of policies) in academic research is one of the priorities for the European Research Area.
The state of play in the EU demonstrates that we are still a long way from achieving full gender equality.
While the number of women researchers in the EU, over the past years, has increased at a higher rate on average than men, only around one third of the EU’s researchers are women. As they move up the academic ladder, women are even less represented, especially in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and ICT. In the EU, the proportion of women among heads of institutions in the higher education sector stood at 22 % in 2017 (data from "She figures 2018") .
It is clear that more effective implementation of EU gender equality objectives by research and innovation organisations across the EU is needed.
This COST Connect event will bring together researchers and innovators from COST Actions and EU (policy) stakeholders that are working to advance gender equality in research and innovation. The workshop will contribute to the ongoing debate on this topic and will offer a platform for discussion and networking between participants.
The interactive format of the COST Connect events encourages dialogue, active engagement and the creation of synergies among participants.
