The main objective of the workshop is to allow the exchange of new results and ideas among specialists from a broad international scientific community active in the field of proton-Boron fusion research. The aneutronic fusion reaction between a proton and a boron–11 nucleus, accompanied by the production of three alpha particles, is of great interest nowadays, both from the fundamental and applied physics point of view. This reaction, involving only abundant and stable isotopes in the reactants and no-neutrons in the products, offers a valid and sustainable alternative to the conventional route to nuclear fusion for power generation. Recently, an innovative technique named PBCT (Proton Boron Capture Therapy) has been demonstrated experimentally using molecules containing 11B nuclei absorbed in cancer cells (in-vitro tests) which can potentially be administered onto a deep-seated tumor and then bombarded with a proton beam typically used in hadrontherapy. The macroscopic effect is enhanced biological damage of the tumor and treatment selectivity (simultaneously reduction of unwanted side effects on healthy tissues) compared to that caused only by the incoming protons. Both topics will be presented and discussed during the workshop and will cover all subjects starting from experimental results, via diagnostics and targetry, to simulations. Particular emphasis wll be given to advancements towards the realisation of high brightness alpha particle sources for applications.
The workshop will be held in the Czech Republic, from 2 to 4 October at the Institute of Italian Culture in Prague (Šporkova 14 118 00 Praha 1 - Malá Strana) and on 5 October in the ELI Beamlines facility in Dolní Břežany (Za Radnicí 835, 524 41 Dolní Břežany).
