Description
The WEARSENSNET Action aims to establish Europe’s first multidisciplinary network addressing unmet needs in wearable healthcare biosensors for real-time monitoring, while expanding their application into new sectors. It promotes collaboration among academic, industrial, and policy stakeholders to advance scientific knowledge and strengthen technology transfer in wearable biosensing devices.
Despite significant investment in the development of wearable biosensors capable of providing non-invasive, continuous monitoring of physiological parameters through body fluid biomarkers, only a limited number of analytes can currently be detected, and often only at relatively high concentrations. Key challenges, including sensitivity, system integration, wearability, and the detection of multiple biomarkers at clinically relevant levels, are addressed to support emerging applications in precision medicine and sports. Additionally, wearable biosensors hold strong potential for space exploration and remote healthcare, where medical needs resemble those of populations in underserved regions on Earth.
This Action focuses on integrating advances in molecular recognition, biomimetics, hybrid and nanomaterials, transduction mechanisms, fabrication techniques, and data processing to meet practical demands of real-world sensor applications. It brings together medical scientists, bioengineers, chemists, physicists, and nanotechnologists within WEARSENSNET to foster interdisciplinary exchange. Early-stage researchers are prioritised through targeted opportunities such as short-term scientific missions. At the same time, the Action implements a strategy to connect scientists, technology developers, and end-users, accelerating progress towards the next generation of miniaturised wearable nanobiosensors.
The ultimate goal of WEARSENSNET is to drive scientific and technological advancement in wearable biosensing through new collaborations and innovative research initiatives, thereby strengthening European leadership in this field.
