Genetic diversity goal, target, and indicators & Update on ongoing application of genetic diversity indicators

Side event by G-BIKE COST Action in collaboration with other organisations at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity

Genetic diversity and adaptive capacity help ensure resilient ecosystems, support ecosystem services, and benefit society. Genetic diversity is vital in a time of new diseases, invasive pests, habitat change, and climate change. Through short presentations, engaging examples, and conversation, we will: use engaging examples to discuss the importance of genetic diversity; explain feasible and affordable genetic diversity indicators that do not require DNA data (A.0.4, A.8.1, and others); connect indicators to Goal A and Target 4 text; present outcomes of recent national level indicator deployment in 8 countries; and facilitate discussion among Parties on capacity, needs, and partnerships. The diverse co-hosts of this event represent organizations from 15 countries and 5 continents, and many international institutions, highlighting the global importance of this topic. We will show that monitoring and reporting on genetic diversity status and conservation is feasible and necessary.
