New COST Actions stand out as highly interdisciplinary
The first 40 Actions funded under the COST Association show a highly interdisciplinary nature, with almost half of the Actions being related to two or three main OECD fields of Science and Technology.
The fields are:
- Natural sciences
- Engineering and technology
- Medical and health sciences
- Agricultural sciences
- Social sciences
Applicants were requested to indicate up to five relevant research areas from different or the same S&T fields. 26 Actions indicated natural sciences as their main field, with engineering and technology and medical and health sciences the second and third choices overall.
Roughly 25% of the participants in the 40 successful proposals are early career investigators, while a third are female. 25% are from an Inclusiveness Target Country.
The new Actions reflect COST new scientific organisation, aiming to guarantee a fully open and bottom-up approach to evaluating and selecting the most innovative and breakthrough proposals. This renewed evaluation and selection procedure favours interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary projects, at the same time nurturing the networking of excellent science and technology research.
