COST country focus: Portugal
Joining COST in 1971, Portugal has been a member of COST for its full forty year history. The national COST Office is hosted by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia.

Having been a part of just over 550 COST Actions in the past forty years, Portugal has made significant contributions to European science and research. Chairing nine Actions, Portugal has contributed to post-fire forest management in southern Europe, the promotion of science-based developments in sustainable constructions in Europe and accessibility instruments for planning practice in Europe.
Furthermore, through the COST Actions in which Portugal has participated, it has contributed to tackling inflammation in brain disease, managing greenhouse gas emissions from European soils, detecting bacterial environments that are antibiotic-resistent as well as exploring black holes and their impact on the evolution of the universe, to name but a few.
Active across all COST's Domains, Portugal's contribution listed here can only give a brief overview of its involvement. More information on all the COST Actions which Portugal both chairs and participates in can be found on the new COST country page.
This country focus fits in a summer series in which we visit each COST country in alphabetical order to highlight its achievements in the COST Programme.
