Results of a national COST study carried out in 2009 show that COST has an excellent reputation within the German research community. German scientists confirm that COST is an efficient instrument to foster international cooperation which leads to the creation of long-lasting networks.

For many participants, COST serves as an entry point to European research funding. The most relevant benefits of COST Actions are publications of results in high-ranked scientific journals, efficient support of young researchers, the interdisciplinarity of COST and also the contribution to international standards and harmonisation of measuring methods and techniques.

Germany participates in just over 800 COST Actions and is the chair of 50 COST Actions. Within these 50 COST Actions, Germany has contributed to short range forecasting methods of fog, visibility and low clouds as well as contributing to a strategy for analysing the prospects of European electoral democracy that includes the west, south and east of the continent. Germany has, moreover, participated in Actions which have contributed to the optimal management of wastewater systems, UV-B forecasting as well as the assessment of production, release, distribution and health impact of allergenic pollen in Europe..

More information on all the COST Actions which Germany both chairs and participates in can be found on the new COST country page.

This country focus fits in a summer series in which we visit each COST country in alphabetical order to highlight its achievements in the COST Programme.
