Tribute to Professor Zsolt Kajcsos

The COST community was saddened by the news that Professor Zsolt Kajcsos, Vice-Chair of the Domain Committee for Materials, Physics and Nanosciences and Domain Committee Rapporteur for many COST Actions, passed away on 27 July 2011.

Professor Kajcsos was working at the KFKI Research Institute for Particle and Nuclear Physics, Budapest, and his demise was completely unexpected. He is survived by his wife Evi and daughter Zsofia, to whom the COST community is sending all their thoughts.

Professor Kajcsos supported the COST mission for many years. On 15 March 2011, the anniversary of the 1848 Hungarian Revolution, he was awarded the prestigious decoration, the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic. It was given by the State President for achievements in the development and novel applications of nuclear methods in basic research as well as for playing a determining role in numerous international collaborations and active involvement in science policy.

The entire COST community is grateful to Professor Kajcsos for his invaluable contribution and dedication to science and to the COST project. He is a great loss for Europe’s academic and scientific community, where he will certainly be missed.
