World Food Day

The aim of World Food Day is to heighten public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty. In 1980, the General Assembly endorsed observance of the Day in consideration of the fact that "food is a requisite for human survival and well-being and a fundamental human necessity". The theme of the 2011 World Food Day is ‘Food Prices – from Crisis to Stability’.

Networks of Science and Technology – COST exhibition at the European Parliament

From 18 to 20 October 2011, COST will organise a creative exhibition for its 40th birthday at the European Parliament in Brussels, hosted by MEP Pilar del Castillo Vera, member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE). The exhibition will open with a reception on 18 October where Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament, will provide a message. Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science and Dr Ángeles Rodríguez-Peña, President of the COST Committee of Senior Officials, will deliver keynote addresses at that time.

Cities and Climate Change - World Habitat Day

The United Nations has designated the first Monday of October every year as World Habitat Day. The 25th World Habitat Day takes place on 3 October 2011 and the Global Celebration will be hosted by the Government of Mexico. The idea behind World Habitat Day is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic right of all, to adequate shelter. It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.
