European and global forests – which way for the future?

Gaston Franco, Member of the European Parliament and Chair of the Forestry Group of the EP Intergroup Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development hosted this two-day event that celebrated the 2011 International Year of Forests.
This high level event focused on the challenges of sustainable management, conservation and development of forests in Europe and worldwide against climate change.
The conference was divided into two sections with a focus on practical solutions on day one while addressing wider issues on day two.
Dr Sjur Baardsen, Chair of the Forestry, their Products and Services Domain, presented 'the importance of knowledge sharing'.
Other speakers included:
- Professor Jacqueline McGlade, Director of the European Environment Agency
- Franz Fischler, Chairman of the RISE Foundation and Former Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development
- Julia Marton-Lefèvre, Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature
