COST was delighted to host a Tutorial and a Session at the European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC 2016), as well as participate in a Workshop.

EuCNC 2016  was the 25 th edition of a successful series of a technical conference in the field of telecommunications, sponsored by the European Commission.  The 2016 edition was co-organized with the University of Piraeus and the Institute of Communications and Computer Systems (ICCS). This conference was a cornerstone event for research in advanced networks and associated topics, with multiple exciting sessions, workshops, exhibitions/demonstrations, as well as an outstanding social programme.

COST hosted a Special Session and a Tutorial, as well as participated in a Workshop.

The Special Session COST: Inclusive Radio Communications for 5G and Beyond – IoT and MTC (Wednesday 29 June, from 11:00 to 12:30)

The objective of this session was to discuss the technical challenges and application requirements of some of the most important verticals of 5G, related to IoT/MTC: smart farming and precision agriculture, smart cities, automotive applications. The scope was to contribute to the overall discussion currently ongoing that will feed the start of the 5G standardisation phase. It tapped on the results achieved in the ended COST Action IC1004 and on the research areas of the (then) newly started COST Action CA15104 IRACON.

Speakers at this session were:

  • Prof. Roberto Verdone, MC Member for Italy, COST Action CA15104 (Special Session Chairman)
  • Mrs Chiara Buratti, Fiexed-term Junior Assistant Professor, University of Bologna
  • Prof. Narcis Cardona,Vice Chair, COST Action CA15104
  • Prof. Florian Kaltenberger, MC Substitute Member, COST Action CA15104
  • Prof. Erik Ström, MC Member for Sweden, COST Action CA15104
  • Dr Ralph Stübner, Science Officer, COST

The Tutorial   COST: Fundamentals of Coding for Network Coding and Applications (Monday 27 June, from 14:00 to 17:30)

Random network coding emerged through an award-winning paper by R. Koetter and F. Kschischang in 2008 and has since then opened a major research area in communication technology with widespread applications for communication networks like the internet, wireless communication systems, and cloud computing. It allows transmitting information through a network by disregarding any of its topological features.

The tutorial of COST Action IC1104 provided an account of the deep fundamentals of network coding, coding over network coding and latest results. Practical applications were also introduced showing how network coding technology can provide actual solutions to technological challenges in the framework of 5G trends in networking.

The Speakers for this tutorial were:

  • Prof. Marcus Greferath, Chair, COST Action IC1104
  • Dr Ángeles Vazquez Castro, MC Member for Spain, COST Action IC1104

The Workshop   Big Data for Reliable 5G Networking (Monday 27 June, from 14:00 to 17:30)

The workshop addressed fundamental scientific challenges regarding the use of Big Data techniques for 5G network management. Specific topics of interest included Big Data for resource and service optimization, Big Data for QoS/QoE driven self-management, Big Data for green networking, Big Data for network economics and pricing, QoS/QoE monitoring for Big Data analytics, monitoring behavioural data while guaranteeing the users’ privacy, etc.

The COST related Speakers for this tutorial were:
