The first COST Seminar of the season turned to the important topic of innovation.
Innovation was the topic on everyone’s lips at September’s COST seminar when César Santos Gil from the Innovation Policy Development Unit at DG Enterprise was invited to discuss the Community Innovation Policy. In the current economic climate, he explained that Europe needs to “innovate its way out of the crisis.”
He is part of the team preparing the grounds for a European Innovation Strategy. Across the globe, governments are turning to innovation to better the economy. In May this year, Australia released its innovation policy agenda. It will hope to double the level of collaboration between its businesses, universities, and publicly-funded research agencies over the next decade.
In light of the recently published Community Innovation policy and the Council’s request for a European Innovation, Mr Santos Gil examined what has been done so far and what is expected in the future. He spoke of taking a broader approach to innovation by improving IPR systems, creating a RTD and innovation-friendly state aid regime, increasing researcher mobility and further cluster development.
“We need to increase focus and policy coherence to support innovation at Community level, as well as with the national and regional levels,” he concluded.
