Benefits of Research Infrastructures beyond Science - 1st Steering Committee Meeting -

Location London
Date 25 September 2009  | 8:30 - 18:30

Leading in technology is a prerequisite for leading in the marketplace. Large-scale scientific research infrastructure investments generate major technology spin-offs and boost innovation.

COST seeked to support the identification of these economical/societal benefits through a workshop on one the world’s proposed scientific mega-projects for the next decade: the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) . The many technical challenges posed by the SKA project need solutions, e.g. handling of massive data streams, the related data storage and processing, low energy computing, “mass-production” of
high-precision antennas of grand dimensions, precision construction in a huge area and many more. COST will help to deliver solutions and support the innovation chain directly through this workshop and the potential new initiatives (e.g. Actions) stemming from it.
