Benefits of Research Infrastructures beyond Science - 1st Steering Committee Meeting -

Location London
Date 25 September 2009 | 8:30 - 18:30

Leading in technology is a prerequisite for leading in the marketplace. Large-scale scientific research infrastructure investments generate major technology spin-offs and boost innovation.

COST seeked to support the identification of these economical/societal benefits through a workshop on one the world’s proposed scientific mega-projects for the next decade: the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The many technical challenges posed by the SKA project need solutions, e.g. handling of massive data streams, the related data storage and processing, low energy computing, “mass-production” of
high-precision antennas of grand dimensions, precision construction in a huge area and many more. COST will help to deliver solutions and support the innovation chain directly through this workshop and the potential new initiatives (e.g. Actions) stemming from it.
