Transdisciplinary strategic eventMaterials in a resource-constrained worldModern society is totally dependent upon the affordable access to raw materials from which high-tech materials are produced for the automotive, aviation, electronics, power generation, medical, construction and other industries. We live in a materialized world. However, the triptych of decreasing finite natural resources, an ever increasing human population, and rapidly increasing levels of consumption in the developing world are putting increasing demands on the planets' raw materials and natural resources.

Transdisciplinary strategic eventThe future concept and reality of Social Robotics: Challenges, Perception and Applications - Role of Social Robotics in current and future societyResearchers have exerted considerable efforts to advance the robotic technologies as well as to understand their social implications. As a result, robotics is now a highly articulated field with various types of robots already assisting numerous areas of human activity. Despite their increasing significance and relevance, the general public tends to think that robots still belong to the world of science fiction and research laboratories.

Transdisciplinary strategic eventOpen Access: COST Symposium on Practice, Opportunities and ChallengesDebate and discussion in relation to open access to publications and on open access to research data have taken place across a range of disciplines in recent years. The European Commission recommendation (July 2012) on access to and preservation of scientific information, recent consultations by the EU Commissioner for Research and Innovation with stakeholders on this matter, numerous statements and initiatives from national research funding bodies, as well as debates on how to advance open science within the context of the European Research Area, attest to the current significance of this topic, not only for researchers, but also for industry and ultimately for societies as a whole.

COST Action events"Plant Epigenetics" WorkshopIn the last few years, research in the field of epigenetics has gained strong scientific momentum in all disciplines of biology. Epigenetics, that studies covalent modifications of DNA and chromatin, is very interesting for many reasons, one of which being the transmission of information from cell to cell or from parents to siblings, independently of the DNA sequence. In other words, gene expression states (which genes were “on” or “off”) can be transmitted from one cell to its progeny. Epigenetics has important implications in many different fields of research such as basic regulation of gene expression, plant resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, genome evolution, ecological adaptation and plant breeding.
